Jamie Lee Curtis Opens Up About Plastic Surgery Experience Following On-Set Comments

Jamie Lee Curtis, the acclaimed Oscar-winning actress, recently shared her personal experience with plastic surgery, which she underwent at the age of 25 after receiving an on-set remark about her appearance.

During the production of the 1985 romantic drama Perfect, a cinematographer commented that her eyes appeared “baggy”, leading Curtis to feel embarrassed and resulting in her decision to pursue cosmetic surgery once filming concluded.

In her interview with 60 Minutes, she recounted, “He was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not shooting her today. Her eyes are baggy’. It was very embarrassing. So as soon as the movie finished, I ended up having some plastic surgery.”

Reflecting on the outcome, Curtis, now 66, stated, “I regretted it immediately and have kind of regretted it since. I’ve become a really public advocate to say to women: ‘You’re gorgeous and you’re perfect the way you are.’ It was not a good thing for me to do.”

The actress, who has received two Golden Globe awards, also opened up about her struggles with addiction to painkillers that began after her surgery. She admitted to stealing opioids over a decade-long period in her youth.

She shared, “I became very enamoured with the warm bath of an opiate. You know, [I] drank a little bit, never to excess, never any big public demonstrations. I was very quiet and private about it. But it became a dependency for sure.”

After overcoming her opioid dependency in 1999, Curtis described her recovery as her greatest achievement. Reflecting on her past, she expressed gratitude for not making regrettable decisions while under the influence.

In 2023, she conveyed concerns about the negative impact of cosmetic surgery and digital alteration, stating that such practices are “wiping out generations of beauty. Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back.”

Curtis also recounted how witnessing her parents undergo face and neck lifts exposed her to the rigid beauty standards prevalent in Hollywood. She is the daughter of esteemed actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.

“I watched their work diminish, I watched their fame not diminish. And the contradiction of a lot of fame, but not a lot of work, is really hard to navigate for people,” she reflected. “For the rest of your life, you’re famous for something you did a long time ago and you chase that attention.”

In an exciting return to the big screen, Curtis will appear in August in Freakier Friday, a sequel to the beloved film Freaky Friday, alongside Lindsay Lohan. Curtis first made her mark in the iconic horror film Halloween in 1978 and won an Academy Award in 2023 for her supporting role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
