Morgan Supersport: The Fusion of Classic Design and Modern Technology

Celebrating its 115th anniversary last year, Morgan Motor Company continues to uphold its legacy of crafting iconic British sports cars. This includes a lineup that features the distinctive three-wheeler roadster along with various lightweight, open-top sports cars. Models like the Super 3, Plus Four, and Plus Six remain staples in their updated forms.

The new flagship in Morgan’s offerings is the Supersport, which fills the void left by the iconic Aero 8, produced from 2000 to 2018. While the Aero 8 was known for its retro-futuristic aesthetic, the Supersport marks the beginning of a new chapter for the brand, representing a complete redesign and a new model line dedicated to performance.

Takes five years of meticulous development, the Supersport showcases a thorough re-engineering of Morgan’s design philosophy without losing its recognizable identity. Upon unveiling, the vehicle maintained the unmistakable Morgan essence, highlighted by a beautifully crafted badge featuring the brand’s historic HFS font. Although it retains its heritage, the Supersport introduces a modern aesthetic with smoother body lines, a sleek aluminum exterior that enhances its aerodynamic efficiency, and a cleaner profile with gentle curves. Notably absent are the traditional louvres on the bonnet, replaced now by internal hinges that provide improved structural integrity and fit.

As with all Morgan vehicles, the Supersport is handcrafted in Malvern Link, with a wooden frame that speaks to the brand’s commitment to artisan coachbuilding. The attention to craftsmanship is apparent when opening the boot, revealing a piece of exposed wood that accentuates its bespoke design.

Customers can choose between a hardtop and a soft-top, both of which are easily interchangeable thanks to consistent mounting points. The soft-top option provides a folding fabric roof, while the hardtop features a lightweight carbon composite design with an innovative rear curved screen—a first for Morgan. The conventional side screens also remain, now featuring a precision mounting system for effortless installation and storage in a designated boot slot, promoting the open driving style that many Morgan enthusiasts cherish.

Inside the Supersport, drivers are met with classic pad-printed analog dials and a bespoke audio system developed in partnership with Sennheiser. The redesigned center console features modern conveniences like a wireless charging device holder and hands-free calling with active noise cancellation, offering clarity even at 70 mph with the roof down, all while maintaining a vintage aesthetic devoid of intrusive digital displays. This synthesis of high-tech features and old-school charm enhances the driving experience without alienating traditionalists.

Morgan aims to produce 200 Supersports annually, with projected distribution of 20% to the UK, 40% to Europe, and 40% globally. Despite the array of modernizations, the Supersport maintains a commendably low weight of just 1,170 kg, ensuring agility and performance.

The Supersport was introduced in striking pink and blue colors, a coincidental nod to the recent struggles of another British brand, Jaguar. However, Morgan is optimistic about the reception of its newest model, confident in its ability to appeal to loyal customers while offering enhanced capabilities.
